Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday Is the last day before lent. Shrove Tuesday is celebrated in the UK as a day when pancakes are prepared and consumed. The idea was the Monks would have eggs and milk which they would go without for the 40 days and 40 nights of Lent.
Lent is the time when you are supposed to choose one of your favorite items to give up for those 40 days. People choose things like giving up chocolate or deserts for Lent.
It is believed that it takes 21 days to form a new habit a figure often repeated by the “experts”. This figure was based on a 1960 book called Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz. He was a Plastic Surgeon who found that his patients took on average 21 days to get used to any plastic surgery that they had undertaken.
21 days is also believed to be the length of time it has been stated that people who have bad habits take to stop a “Bad Habit”.
This year taking a cue from the religious calendar I am going to give up losing. I have decided that for the next 40 days I am going to view any set back as only temporary inconvenience in achieving my goals.
And in giving up Losing the associated habit of Procrastination is also going to go on hiatus. Will I succeed? I don’t know.
I will have the calendar set up for me from tonight to Easter Sunday these two negative habits are going to be banished. The Day after Easter they can come back (although I hope not).
So what are you giving up for Lent?
If you want to comment on what you are giving up please feel free to do so. Maybe after Easter we can all compare notes?
